Zamfara Wildlife Park

Southern Zamfara

Zamfara Wildlife Park in Yankari area of southern Zamfara is a savannah wildlife reserve that historically harboured significant populations of roan antelopes, lions, baboons, and other Guinea savannah species. The park's status under current security conditions is uncertain and access must be verified locally before any visit attempt.

Tsafe Hills

Tsafe local government area (LGA), Zamfara

The Tsafe Hills in eastern Zamfara are a series of granite inselbergs and rocky outcrops providing dramatic scenery over the surrounding semi-arid landscape. The hills are home to small-scale traditional gold mining communities and offer views across the Zamfara plains.

When to go

Climate, month by month.

Pack right

What to wear, by season.

Packing guidance for the semi-arid north, the climate zone Zamfara State sits in.

October in the far north is a sharp transition. The rains end abruptly, the landscape dries out within weeks, and nights turn cold well before the days do.
recommended
Transitional layer

Evenings turn cold quickly through October. A light jacket covers the transition.

recommended
Dust scarf

Harmattan sets in from mid-October. Starting dust protection early saves a week of throat irritation.

recommended
Closed shoes

The ground dries fast and dust returns with it.

The far north in December is a different country from the coast in December, and the two run at the same time. A day-to-night swing of around 15 degrees Celsius / 27 degrees Fahrenheit catches most southern visitors off guard. If the trip covers both, pack for both.
essential
Layering is essential

A light shirt for the afternoon and a warm fleece or jacket for morning and evening. The daily temperature swing is the largest in the country.

essential
Closed shoes and socks

Dust settles on everything. Sandals lead to severely dry and cracked feet within days.

essential
Dust scarf or face covering

Harmattan dust causes real respiratory irritation. A light cotton scarf or dust mask for outdoor movement is strongly recommended.

essential
Heavy moisturiser and lip balm

Humidity under 20 percent dries and cracks skin rapidly. Pack a thick body lotion and apply morning and night.

The north in the rains is unrecognisable next to harmattan: cooler, green, and far easier to breathe in. Heritage sites look their best and the season is badly underrated by visitors.
essential
Light breathable clothing

June to September is markedly cooler than the April peak. Lightweight cotton is right.

recommended
Waterproof sandals

Northern roads flood in short, intense bursts. Older city centres and market districts drain slowly.

August is the coolest and greenest month in the far north. If the trip is built around heritage sites and old city architecture, this is a strong visiting window.
recommended
Light waterproof layer

Rain is brief but intense. A packable jacket covers most events.

essential
Light breathable clothing

Temperatures are comfortable through the peak. Cotton works well.

recommended
Insect repellent

Standing water after heavy falls raises mosquito activity sharply.
