Fly into Nigeria.
Every direct route and the smartest connections from the US, UK, Canada, and Europe into Lagos and Abuja, plus the baggage playbook.
Last reviewed April 2026
United from Washington D.C. (IAD) and Delta from Atlanta (ATL) are the only true nonstop options from the US. No connections means the lowest risk of lost bags.
For travellers departing from the eastern US, two airlines operate direct nonstop service to Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport (LOS).
United Airlines
Washington D.C. (IAD) → Lagos (LOS)
The only nonstop service from the US capital corridor. Flight time approximately 11 hours. Departs late evening, arrives Lagos morning - optimal for immigration. Economy and Polaris Business class available.
Delta Air Lines
Atlanta (ATL) → Lagos (LOS)
Direct from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, the busiest US hub. Approximately 12 hours. Strong frequency makes this the preferred route for the "Detty December" crowd due to availability. Delta One business class available.
Qatar Airways
US West Coast (LAX/SFO/JFK) → Doha (DOH) → Lagos (LOS)
The best West Coast option. Doha is one of the most efficient transit hubs globally - immigration is fast, the terminal is excellent, and connection times under 3 hours are reliable. Baggage handling is consistently rated among the best on the Nigeria corridor.
Emirates
US Cities → Dubai (DXB) → Lagos (LOS)
Preferred by Nigerian diaspora for the quality of service. Dubai International is a world-class transit hub with multiple Nigeria departure times throughout the day. Strong reliability record on the Lagos route.
Royal Air Maroc
New York (JFK) → Casablanca (CMN) → Lagos (LOS)
An underrated option for New York departures. Casablanca is a short, manageable layover and the carrier offers competitive pricing on the transatlantic segment. Book early - Casablanca connections to Lagos sell out.
Ethiopian Airlines
US Cities → Addis Ababa (ADD) → Lagos (LOS) or Abuja (ABV)
Cost-effective from JFK, IAD, ORD, and LAX via Addis Ababa. The key advantage: Ethiopian serves Abuja (ABV) directly, so travellers heading to the North or Middle Belt can skip Lagos entirely. Addis Ababa Bole is a modern, manageable hub. Book 3-4 months ahead for competitive pricing.
Tactical. Book direct whenever the price premium is under an estimated $300 versus a one-stop option. The time and baggage risk saved on a 12-hour flight almost always justifies the difference. West Coast travellers (LAX, SFO) have no viable nonstop option - Qatar Airways and Emirates are the most reliable choices via Doha and Dubai respectively, with strong onboard standards for the 18-20 hour journey.
London Heathrow (LHR) is the busiest departure point to Lagos (LOS) outside the US. Multiple daily flights with real choice between carriers at different price points.
The London–Lagos corridor is the highest-traffic Nigeria route globally. Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Air Peace, and Turkish Airlines all compete for this market, giving travellers genuine price competition and multiple daily departure times.
Virgin Atlantic
London Heathrow (LHR) → Lagos (LOS)
Generally regarded as the premium carrier on the LHR–Lagos corridor. Upper Class and Premium Economy are highly rated. Strong onboard service and consistent departures. Arrives at MMIA Terminal 2.
British Airways
London Heathrow (LHR) → Lagos (LOS)
The legacy carrier on this route. Reliable schedules. Confirm before booking that your arrival routes into MMIA Terminal 2 (the new international terminal) rather than the older wing - it matters significantly for immigration wait times.
Air Peace
London Heathrow (LHR) → Lagos (LOS)
Nigeria's flag carrier on the LHR-Lagos corridor since 2023. Direct service, no connections. Often the most affordable option on the route and offers a distinctly Nigerian onboard experience. Arrives at MMIA Terminal 2.
Lufthansa
European Cities → Frankfurt (FRA) → Lagos (LOS) or Abuja (ABV)
Excellent for travellers from secondary European cities who need a Frankfurt connection. Lufthansa serves both Lagos and Abuja, which is a significant advantage for northern Nigeria-bound travellers. Frankfurt is a large hub - allow 90 minutes minimum for connections.
KLM
European Cities → Amsterdam (AMS) → Lagos (LOS)
Amsterdam Schiphol is consistently the easiest European hub for Nigerian connections. Compact terminal, fast transit, and KLM has a strong baggage handling record on the Nigeria corridor compared to other European carriers.
Air France
European Cities → Paris (CDG) → Lagos (LOS)
Paris CDG connection for southern and mainland European travellers. Competitive fares from Paris, Amsterdam, and Frankfurt feeder cities. The CDG connection is the trade-off: it is the highest-risk European hub for bags on the Nigeria corridor. If booking Air France, treat your hold luggage as carry-on only or place an AirTag in it. Build a minimum 2.5-hour layover at CDG.
Turkish Airlines
Global → Istanbul (IST) → Lagos (LOS)
A strong option for travellers connecting from Asia, Middle East, or Eastern Europe. Istanbul Airport is modern and efficient. Turkish Airlines has competitive pricing on the Lagos route and good reliability.
Ethiopian Airlines
Global → Addis Ababa (ADD) → Lagos (LOS) or Abuja (ABV)
A strong option for travellers connecting from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, or East Africa. Ethiopian Airlines routes via Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, a modern and well-run hub. Notable because Ethiopian Airlines serves Abuja (ABV) directly - useful for northern Nigeria-bound travellers who want to avoid a Lagos landing and domestic connection. Competitive pricing across most origin cities. Also available from UK (London) for travellers who prefer the Africa hub routing.
Tactical. Air Peace launched a competitive London–Lagos direct route in 2026. It is often the most affordable option on the corridor and offers a distinctly Nigerian hospitality experience onboard. For mainland European departures, Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS/KLM) is consistently rated the easiest European hub for Nigerian connections - fast transit, manageable distances between gates, and reliable baggage handling.
No direct Canada–Nigeria routes exist. All Canadian travellers connect through a European hub or Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (ADD). Choose your hub wisely - it determines your total travel time and baggage risk.
No Canadian route to Lagos is under 14 hours. The most reliable connection from Toronto (YYZ) is London via Virgin Atlantic or British Airways - higher cost but the best hub efficiency and baggage record on the corridor.
Ethiopian Airlines
Toronto (YYZ) / Montreal (YUL) → Addis Ababa (ADD) → Lagos (LOS)
The most cost-effective option for Canadian travellers. Addis Ababa Bole Airport is a major African hub and layovers are manageable. Total travel time is 20-24 hours depending on layover. Booking 3-4 months out is essential for good prices.
Virgin Atlantic / British Airways
Toronto (YYZ) → London Heathrow (LHR) → Lagos (LOS)
The most reliable routing for Canadian travellers. LHR is familiar to most Nigerians in the diaspora, efficient, and the onward Lagos leg is frequent. If flying into LHR on one carrier and departing on another, check terminal - T3 to T5 can take 60-90 minutes.
KLM
Toronto (YYZ) → Amsterdam (AMS) → Lagos (LOS)
Amsterdam Schiphol is a single-terminal airport - no terminal changes, efficient transit. KLM has a strong baggage handling record. Total travel is 15-16 hours. A solid option that is often priced competitively against the London routing.
Lufthansa
Toronto (YYZ) → Frankfurt (FRA) → Lagos (LOS) or Abuja (ABV)
Useful because Lufthansa serves Abuja - if your destination is the North or Middle Belt, this avoids a Lagos domestic connection. Frankfurt is a large airport; allow at least 90 minutes for international-to-international connections.
Tactical. For most Canadian travellers, the London connection via Virgin Atlantic or British Airways from Toronto (YYZ) is the most reliable option despite the higher price. Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS/KLM) is the second-best hub choice. Avoid Air France via CDG unless you are prepared to travel carry-on only - the baggage handling at that hub on the Lagos connection is consistently cited as a problem.
Book Detty December flights by July or face a 40–60% price spike. Off-peak months offer the best combination of price and weather.
Nigeria flight pricing follows two distinct patterns: the aggressive Detty December surge (November–January) and a predictable off-peak window that most travellers overlook.
Detty December Window - Book by July
November, December, January travel
Flight prices for December travel to Nigeria typically spike 40-60% once September arrives. July is the last reliable window to find round-trip fares under an estimated $1,500 / £900 from the US and UK respectively. If you see a fare at or below those benchmarks in July, lock it in immediately.
Off-Peak Sweet Spot - March to May
March, April, May travel
The dry-season tail end. Avoid the extreme humidity of the June-July rainy season, avoid the premium homecoming pricing of December, and benefit from 6-8 weeks booking lead time rather than planning 5-6 months ahead. March to May is the single best window for first-time visitors.
Second Off-Peak - September to October
September, October travel
The window between the rainy season tail and the Detty December buildup. Flights are competitively priced, destinations are less crowded, and you avoid both the humidity of June-July and the premium pricing of November-December. Good for cultural and heritage travel.
Booking Strategy by Origin - Price Benchmarks
Round-trip price targets by departure city
Washington DC/New York/Atlanta via direct: est. $1,400–$1,800. London via Virgin/Air Peace/BA: est. £700–£1,100. Toronto via Europe: est. $1,600–$2,100 CAD. Mainland Europe via Lufthansa/KLM/AF: est. €800–€1,200. West Coast US via Qatar/Emirates: est. $1,500–$2,200.
Tactical. Use Google Flights price tracking and set an alert for your target route in May or June. The first significant price drop of the year typically happens in late January after the post-Christmas rush clears. March bookings for June travel are almost always the best value of the year.
Which terminal you land at determines your first hour in Nigeria. MMIA Terminal 2 is the new international terminal - faster immigration, better baggage handling. Abuja is the right call for northern destinations.
Nigeria has two major international entry points: Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA/LOS) in Lagos and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (ABV) in Abuja.
MMIA Terminal 2 - New International Terminal
Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos (LOS)
The new terminal is a world-class facility with significantly faster immigration processing, modern baggage carousels, and functional air conditioning. All major international carriers now route into Terminal 2. Confirm this at check-in - if your itinerary does not specify T2, ask the airline directly.
Abuja Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport
Abuja (ABV) - Federal Capital Territory
The right entry point for northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt. The Abuja airport is smaller, more manageable, and immigration queues are typically shorter than MMIA. If your itinerary includes Abuja, Jos, Kano, Kaduna, or surrounding states, this is your airport.
Port Harcourt International Airport
Port Harcourt (PHC) - Rivers State
Relevant for travellers with business in the Niger Delta, oil sector, or South South destinations. International connections are limited - most visitors fly Lagos or Abuja and connect domestically. Check if your carrier serves PHC before routing through Lagos unnecessarily.
Digital Prep - e-Visa Print Requirement
All ports of entry
Nigeria no longer offers Visa on Arrival. All visitors must obtain an e-Visa before departure via immigration.gov.ng. While the system is digital, Nigerian immigration officers at the airport frequently process passengers faster when presented with a printed copy of the e-Visa approval letter. Print it. Do not rely solely on your phone display.
Tactical. If your final destination is anywhere in the North (Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Bauchi, Gombe, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Taraba) or the Middle Belt (Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Kogi, Niger, FCT), fly direct to Abuja (ABV) if your carrier serves it. A Lagos landing plus a domestic connection to Abuja costs you 4-6 hours in Lagos traffic and a separate domestic check-in. Lufthansa and Ethiopian Airlines are the main international carriers serving Abuja directly.
EgyptAir complaints are rising. CDG and LHR are high-risk hubs for tight connections. Interline bags via Air Peace or Arik Air require manual re-check. If a bag is lost, file a PIR before you leave the airport. When possible, carry on.
Three connections carry the highest baggage risk on the Nigeria corridor: EgyptAir via Cairo (inconsistent ground handling), Air France via CDG (highest-risk European hub for Lagos-bound bags), and any itinerary that switches to a domestic Nigerian carrier at
EgyptAir & Cairo Hub Warning
USA/UK/Canada → Cairo (CAI) → Lagos (LOS)
Rising complaints on the Nigeria corridor in 2025-2026. Cairo ground handling is inconsistent at volume. Minimum 3-hour layover at CAI. AirTag in every checked bag. If a bag is missing on arrival, file a PIR (Property Irregularity Report) at the airport before leaving - it is the only way to trigger the formal tracing process.
CDG Baggage Risk Warning
Paris Charles de Gaulle - Air France connections
The highest-risk European hub for checked bags on the Nigeria corridor. Complex multi-terminal layout, high Africa-bound volumes, documented handling inconsistencies. Under 2.5 hours layover at CDG is high-risk for bags regardless of carrier. Carry-on only is the only guaranteed protection. If you must check, AirTag every bag.
LHR Tight Connection & Terminal Change Risk
London Heathrow - British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, multi-carrier
LHR becomes a risk factor when connections fall under 60 minutes or when your itinerary routes you through different terminals. T3 to T5 (or vice versa) requires a shuttle and can consume 45–75 minutes. A 90-minute layover with a terminal change is effectively a sprint. Check your terminal assignments for both legs at LHR before booking. British Airways operates exclusively from T5; Virgin Atlantic from T3; Star Alliance carriers from T2. Mixed-carrier itineraries through LHR are especially vulnerable.
Ryanair & easyJet Baggage Handling Note
Intra-European legs before long-haul connections
Travellers who fly a budget European carrier (Ryanair, easyJet) into a hub city before connecting long-haul to Nigeria should be aware that Ryanair and easyJet consistently rank among the top European carriers for mishandled bags. Your bags on the budget leg are not automatically through-checked to your long-haul flight - you will need to collect them, potentially clear security again, and check in separately for the Nigeria leg. Plan for this at booking and allow extra time.
Interline Baggage Trap - Air Peace & Arik Air
Lagos (LOS) connecting to domestic Nigeria via Air Peace or Arik Air
This catches many travellers: you arrive in Lagos on an international flight and plan to connect to a domestic destination (Abuja, Kano, Port Harcourt) on Air Peace or Arik Air. Unless your international airline has a formal interline baggage agreement with Air Peace or Arik, your bags will NOT be automatically transferred. You must collect your checked bags from the international arrivals hall, exit, and re-check them at the domestic terminal. This process takes 60–120 minutes and has caused many missed domestic connections. Confirm through-check status at your departure airport check-in desk before flying.
AirTag Briefing
Checked baggage - all routes
Apple AirTags (or Samsung SmartTags for Android users) have become standard equipment for Nigeria-bound travellers. Place one inside each checked bag before departure. When baggage is delayed, you can provide the airline with the real-time GPS location of your bag rather than relying on their tracking system - this significantly accelerates forwarding. AirTags are permitted in checked baggage on all major carriers.
Carry-On Essentials - The Non-Negotiable List
Personal bag strategy - all routes
Treat your checked bag as an item that may arrive 48–72 hours after you, because on some routes it will. Pack in your carry-on: two days of clothing, all prescription medications (with prescriptions), phone chargers and power banks, printed e-Visa or visa documents, your first 24 hours of cash (USD or local), and any item you cannot replace or cannot function without. Everything else can wait for forwarded bags. This one practice eliminates the vast majority of baggage-related travel crises on the Nigeria corridor.
If Your Bag Is Lost - What to Do
All airports - before you leave the arrivals hall
Do not leave the airport without filing a PIR (Property Irregularity Report) at the airline's baggage desk in the arrivals hall. This is the official record of your missing bag and is required to make any subsequent claim. Get a written reference number before you leave - without it, the airline has no obligation to forward or compensate. Under the Montreal Convention (which most major airlines follow), airlines have 21 days to locate and return a lost bag before it is classified as permanently lost and compensation becomes due. If the bag is confirmed lost, file a claim with the airline first; if that fails, escalate to your travel insurer with the PIR reference number and all receipts for emergency replacement items. In Nigeria, FAAN (Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria) handles airport-level complaints at MMIA and Abuja - their contact is faan.gov.ng. Keep copies of your baggage receipts (the tags attached at check-in) as proof of checking the bag.
Tactical. Minimum connection times that work: CDG and LHR at 2.5-3 hours, Cairo at 3 hours. Under those thresholds and your bag is at real risk of arriving a day behind you. Place an AirTag in any checked bag before departure regardless of carrier. If in doubt, carry on. Two days of clothes, all medication, all documents, all valuables in the cabin. Treat your checked bag as something that may arrive separately.
