When to go

Climate, month by month.

Pack right

What to wear, by season.

November is arguably the best month to visit Lagos. The rains are ending, prices are pre-December, and the city is less crowded. Pack as you would for dry season but keep one rain layer accessible for the first two weeks.
essential
Light breathable tops

Same as dry season. November is warm and increasingly dry.

optional
Versatile layer

Evening temperatures dip slightly in November. One light cardigan covers the transition.

Lagos in December is not the rains. One light rain jacket is enough as a precaution. Pack for heat, humidity, and back-to-back events. Comfortable shoes matter more than a coat. If you are visiting beach destinations like Elegushi or Tarkwa Bay, reef-safe sunscreen is harder to find locally — bring from home.
essential
Light breathable tops

Cotton or linen. Humidity stays 65-78% even in dry season. Synthetics trap sweat quickly outdoors.

essential
Light trousers or midi dress

Avoid shorts for evening events on the island. Most venues and beach clubs apply a smart-casual standard.

essential
Sun protection

UV Index 7-9 in December. Hat and SPF 50 for outdoor daytime activity, especially on the water at Tarkwa Bay or Elegushi.

recommended
Light layer for AC venues

Restaurants and event spaces on the island run aggressive air conditioning. A light cardigan or linen shirt prevents the temperature shock.

Pack light and treat everything as potentially wet. Use a waterproof bag liner for your day bag. If you are moving around by road frequently, keep a dry change of clothes accessible.
essential
Waterproof rain jacket

Light packable jacket that folds into a bag. Umbrella alone is insufficient in Lagos downpours.

essential
Waterproof shoes or sandals

Avoid suede or canvas. Streets flood regularly in Surulere, Oshodi, and parts of the mainland.

recommended
Quick-dry clothing

Cotton takes too long to dry in Lagos humidity. Linen or moisture-wicking fabrics are better options.

Peak rains in Lagos are serious. Time outdoor activities for morning windows — rain typically comes in the afternoon and evening. Do not leave important outdoor plans for after 2pm unless you have a covered venue.
essential
Heavy-duty rain jacket or poncho

July and September see the heaviest downpours. A thin jacket is not enough for peak season Lagos rain.

essential
Waterproof sandals

Flip flops for indoor use, proper waterproof sandals for street movement. Closed shoes get ruined quickly.

essential
Portable umbrella

Full-size umbrella for the hotel. A compact one for transit.
