Argungu, Kebbi StateThe Argungu International Fishing Festival, held annually on the Matan Fada River in Argungu, is one of the most spectacular traditional festivals in all of Africa. Thousands of fishermen enter the water simultaneously at a signal from the Emir, using hand nets, calabashes, and bare hands to catch fish. The largest fish caught wins a major prize. The festival dates to 1934 but the underlying tradition is centuries older. It is listed as an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.
Kanta Museum, Argungu
